  Well, I don't feel all that bad.  I NEVER heard of 'em in the

The effect is generally no different than pulling the plug (which is a
no-no with digital equipment because you never know what it will do for
that split-second when it can't tell a 1 from a 0...disk drives are most
vulnerable here (not to hardware damage, but to data-damage).

HOWEVER, when the power comes back on, there is generally a surge, and yes,
your surge-protector will help.  I generally turn off all the equipment
during a power-outage, and turn it back on only after the power has been
on steady for 10 minutes.  I have a UPS*, so I rarely have to shut down,
and I can always do so gracefully.

Yeah, it's paranoia, but it's healthy paranoia. :-)  Some paranoids have
real enemies.   Atari blamed the death of my first color monitor on "not

Yes, I know everyones finished it, but I've not
had much time to play games, any way my questions.

I have found a scroll which appears to have some
coded information on it, can some one tell me how
to read this scroll. it starts  GYNRAX well something
like that.

What does the Gem of Ages do ?

Are there four pairs of Boots of speed ? I've only
found the ones near the entrence to the Demond
Director.

PS is there anyway of getting the oracle to tell
me this sort of information ?

You would probably have good results by using a good commercial "backup"
program (probably one of the few legitimate uses for such a binary).  You
could format a blank disk CP/M style, then copy it (using the "PROTECTED"
mode) with ProCopy or Acopy.  This should yield a working disk.

Free (or shareware) Stuffer (by Double Click), available on
atari.archive.umich.edu, or from Steve Grimm (moderator of
comp.{binaries,sources}.atari.st).

Commercial:  Multidesk - 2.1 is last version I know of, is the best
solution I think.  From Codehead software, Hollywood CA (really 8-).

There is a Good reason why the Font Editor is a ACC, it so you can change
fonts even when Calamus is loaded..

Why do you need 6 ACC loaded all at once, Please explain ??

Do you use a Bootup utill like Desk Manager 33, this will let you select
the TSR's and ACC that you need at bootup for each application
that you wish to run, but note, only at bootup.

If you do need more that 6 ACC, then get Codeheads MultiDesk and
the Hotwire program, Hotwire can call MultiDesk as a application
and install all the ACC that you need for a given Application
with just a press of a key and at any time, not just at bootup

IE, Hotwire gives you Hot Keys that can install all the ACC's needed
for that Application and Install the program that you wish to run
and load the document as well, all from one key press.

Note: I don't work for Codehead..but I do think that they produce
some good accessary programs and utilities..

  Well, I think you can do that via Multidesk.  But I believe there is
a shareware DC program (rats, what's the name of it, Mike?) that lets
you have up to like 32 ACC's loaded in, and a commercial version
which lets you have an unlimited supply I believe.  It's just what
you seem to need...

  BTW the shareware version works with MOST ACC's, I've only run into
1 or 2 trouble ACC's that want a regular place in the ACC area...

Try Chameleon, it only loads one at a time, but lets you dump and load from
desk any single DA you wish at any time, during any program etc... It takes up
one slot, and will automatically load whichever DA is called CONTROL.ACX. So if
you want your control panel to remain in memory all the time, then rename it to
something else. Or, if you never want your control panel but want some other DA
to default to that slot, then rename some other DA to CONTROL.ACX. I renamed
NOTEPAD and now when the system boots up I get my five best DA's in permanent
menus, plus NOTEPAD in the chameleon menu. So when I need another DA (I use
this for Fontedit all the time by the way), I hold down shit-alt, pull down
CHAMELEON (which unloads NOTEPAD), and then load whatever else I want. This
works 100% of the time and has never crashed with any DA I have ever tried.
This is far from true with the other DA-Extension type of programs I have used.

The nicest (IMHO) is called UNLZH172.ARC.  It only extracts files, but it
does it fast and is friendly (I only wish there was a "delete lzh after
extract" option.  One really nice feature is that you can automatically
have it create a folder and extract into it.  It can be installed as an
application, so a double click on an .lzh file is all that is needed.

My paranoia got severe enough that I bought a Tripp power

versions of their power conditioners.  The smallest and cheapest is a
600 watt model, then there is 1200 watt and 1800 watt models.

I went for the 1200 watt model because it will handle low and high
voltage. The 600 watt model will only handle one of them (I forgot
which.) This device not only protects the equipment from surge, etc.
but delivers clean 120V when the input voltage is anywhere from around
80V to 140V.

The cost is somewhere around $150.  I believe it a very useful
investment for several thousand dollars worth of equipment.

Thanks for your post, David.  The more people using Spectre
that use Access PC, the better....I'm hoping that Insignia
and/or Dave Small will somehow get AccessPC to access MSDOS
hard disks via Spectre.  I still think it would be great to
use my syquest cartridge with mac and st partitions under
Spectre!

First of all...yes, AccessPC works with non-gcr Spectre...and
yes, you need Spectre 3.0 software.
Second...I experienced a similar problem with floppies being
read as Spectre formatted disks.  I've been using Verbatim ibm
pre-format disks.  At first they have been OK, but with a
couple of them, after a while they showed up as Spectre
formatted disks...then they got all messed up and I had to
reformat them again.  I think I tried a twister-formatted disk
at one point, although I'm not sure, and it showed up as a
Spectre-formatted disk.  When I saw dos and twister disks
showing up differently, I tried to stick to dos-formatted
disks.  But now that you mention it, I'll try to play with
other formats and see what happens.
Just so that something may come of it, I'll just mention how
nice it would be to have Access PC access msdos and st hard
disk partitions from Spectre  (how do I send Dave Small email
on internet again?)

Turbo-C has  been licensed to Gribniff Software (i.e; NeoDesk, etc...)
in the U.S.  I should know...It ran me $280.00 for the Professional pack
which includes the MAS-68k assembler and Turbo-DEBUGGER* .

I don't have the number, but I believe if you call 617-555-1212 you can get
the number--They're in Hadley, Massachusetts.


* The debugger is the most awesome interactive debugger I have ever seen on
  an ST.  It reminds me a great deal of a "windowing" VAX-VMS debugger
  with "real-time" updating of information in windows.....Also, I've had
  at least 12 windows open at the same time and I have TOS 1.2--So I don't
  think they're using GEM either.
  With TD, you can have the SOURCE, ASSEMBLY, VARIABLES, STACK, etc...
  all visible so you can see what your program is doing AS it does it--you
  have variable step rates...

Hmm, seems you have some trouble in getting new software. I'm using the
LHa 2.00 for about a month, the current version is 2.01b. I'll post it
